Every SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP holder should understand that passing the exam is only the first step towards holding this highly valuable and globally recognized professional certificate for the long term. The lifelong learning commitment is an important component of the SHRM certification program, therefore, certificate holders must undergo a re certification process every three years to demonstrate that they are up-to-date in the field, continuously improving their professional knowledge, skills, and abilities in order to maintain the SHRM certification they have obtained.So, what exactly is re certification? When does the holder need to complete re certification? What are the ways to complete re certification? After successfully passing the exam and obtaining the SHRM-CP/SCP certificate, we can check the validity period of the  certificate through the official SHRM system. The first cycle  starts from the day of passing the exam and ends on the last  day of the holder's birth month three years later.


In order to maintain the continued validity of the certificate,  we need to confirm that we are still developing and  improving ourselves in the field of human resources. This  requires us to provide proof in accordance with SHRM  recognized rules and complete the recertification process  through auditing.  Total 60 Professional Development Credits (PDCs) within the 3 years are required after certified.


You can submit complete re certification materials one year  after the start of the certification cycle. If re certification is  not completed, the certificate will expire 60 days after the  certification period ends.


There are many ways to obtain PDCs, which can be obtained through continuing education, organizational development activities, and professional development activities. Let's take a look at them separately.

Ways to Earn PDCs
Continual Education
SHRM recognizes the value of professional development through learning and supports models that meet individual learning needs and preferences. Qualified continuing education courses must be aligned with the SHRM Applied Skills and Knowledge System (SHRM-BASK) ™)  outlined in the document are relevant. There is no upper limit to the PDCs obtained through continuous learning within one certification cycle.
Continuing education activities guided by teachers or arranged by oneself are recognized, and specific forms of activities include but are not limited to: Conferences, seminars, and workshops, Undergraduate/Master's Degree Programs, Continuing skills education and continuing legal education, E-Learning, Video conferencing, web broadcasting, and podcasts, Books and e-books, & Other educational certificates.
One hour of educational activity equals one PDC, and the minimum unit of measurement is 15 minutes. 15 minutes equals 0.25 PDC.
You can earn recertification credits through projects that contribute to the sustained success of your organization and your growth as a human resources professional. To earn credits, you must provide a brief work report detailing the details of the project. The SHRM certification website provides templates for writing reports. The upper limit of PDCs obtained through organizational development activities within one certification cycle is 30 points.

PDC is calculated based on project working time. Completing human resources related project work involving more than 40 hours earns 10 points, more than 80 hours earns 20 points, and more than 120 hours earns 30 points.

SHRM recognizes the value of activities that help sustain the development of the human resources profession and the community. The development activities in professional fields are divided into the following categories, each with specific credit settings.


The upper limit of PDCs obtained through organizational development activities within one certification cycle is 30 points. the activities include giving a speech, research, writing, and publishing, volunteers activities, and becoming a professional association member.
